Kankakee Hospitals Earn Accolades for Cardiac Care

Surgeons at Riverside Medical Center in Kankakee perform 300 open-heart surgeries a year – an average of nearly one every day. It's no wonder that Riverside is currently ranked the No. 1 hospital in Illinois for heart surgery, according to HealthGrades national rating system. One reason for its success is that the hospital has been able to attract top cardiac physicians and nurses from around the country. Meanwhile, Provena St. Mary's Hospital, also in Kankakee, does well in the heart department, too. St. Mary's has an award-winning chest pain department, and is one of only 16 hospitals in Illinois accredited by the Society of Chest Pain Centers.

Oh, My Aching Back
Riverside Medical has also targeted the ailment that afflicts 80 percent of adults at least once, and is the second-leading cause of lost work and hospital stays – back problems. The hospital has created a one-stop-shop Spine Center that quickly gets patients into treatment – whether for therapy, pain management or surgery – and streamlines a process that too often is frustrating and confusing. The Spine Center treats ailments such as degenerative disk disease, arthritis of the spine, compression fractures, low back and neck pain, whiplash and deformities. This attention to back care has prompted HealthGrades to also recognize Riverside Medical in the field of neurosurgery.

Provena St. Mary's recently completed a $2 million renovation project that saw upgrades to the entire first floor. The project included transforming white and sterile common areas – including the entrance – into more inviting spaces with soft lighting and earth tones.

“People are often scared when they come into a hospital, and we want them to feel as comfortable as possible,” says Melissa Tanner, marketing and public relations manager at Provena St. Mary's.

Tanner adds that in 2009, the hospital was recognized by HealthGrades, receiving the Distinguished Hospital Award for Patient Safety. The designation ranks St. Mary's in the top 5 percent of health care providers across the United States for patient safety. In addition, the hospital has five-star ratings for total knee replacement, hip fracture repair and cardiopulmonary rehabilitation.
